MINISTER of Sport and Community Development Shamfa Cudjoe handed over $10,000 worth of boxing equipment and gear to head coach of the Wallerfield Warriors Boxing Gym Waldron Brooks at a presentation ceremony, hosted by the Trinidad Boxing Board of Control (TBBC) at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, on December 3.

The Wallerfield Warriors Boxing Gym was the 11th gym to receive boxing equipment.

A media release from the Ministry of Sport and Community Development on Tuesday, said, “One of the objectives of this programme spearheaded by the TBBC is to assist with the development of boxing by donating equipment to gyms in dire need to be utilised for the training of young and aspiring boxers.

Cudjoe saluted the TBBC for giving excellent service despite working in a hostile and challenging environment.

She also spoke about the importance of the ministry’s upcoming Pink Reign Campaign. The campaign seeks to help the development of women and girls by providing opportunities to increase awareness and participation in sport and physical activity. Cudjoe also encouraged women boxers to take the stage.

On the Ministry’s Community Sport programme, she added, “Despite the challenges of covid19, the Ministry of Sport and Community Development will be engaging in community sports this year, which gives us the opportunity to focus on our communities, in addition to preparing our athletes for the 2021 Olympic Games.”

Cudjoe commended La Horquetta/Talparo MP Foster Cummings for championing his community and congratulated the Wallerfield Warriors Boxing Gym for its continued work to facilitate programmes in sport.

Among those at the handover ceremony were boxing board member and Olympian Cleopatra Borrel, other members of the TBBC, director of the physical education and sport division of the Sport Ministry Gabre-Jesu McTair and members of the Warriors Boxing Gym.
