Brian Lewis, President of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee says he is looking forward to the indication that there will finally be closure on the Caribbean Games saga.
In a tweet on Friday night, the outspoken Lewis said: “9 years on its time for there to be closure re Caribbean Games cancellation by GORTT...There are funds that need to be returned to the taxpayers of Trinidad and Tobago....That’s a non-negotiable in my mind...”
The Caribbean Games, billed as the Olympic Games for Caribbean athletes, was due to be held in T&T in July 2009.
However, mere days before the event, it was cancelled over fears of a global H1n1 outbreak affecting athletes.
Lewis told Loop while the concept of the Games remains foremost in the minds of the Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC), there needs to be closure.
He said liquidators were hired and the wrapping up process of the Caribean Games Company formerly headed by Denise Demming has been ongoing.
Lewis said he is also looking forward to whatever monies are there, an estimated $12 million, to be returned to the people of Trinidad and Tobago.
“From our perspective at the TTOC we always put a real focus on financial integrity whether it is corporate sponsors, donations and so on. Once you receive money for a specific purpose it must go back if there is a differential,” he said.
