The 1964 Tokyo Games marked the first time that the Olympics were to be held in Asia. Tokyo marked its successful reconstruction after World War 2 by choosing the final torchbearer Yoshinori Sakai, who was born in Hiroshima the day the city was destroyed by an atomic bomb. Judo and volleyball were introduced at the Tokyo Games.
